Messari Filecoin Report

Insights from Messari's recently released Q1 2024 Filecoin Ecosystem Report.

Last week, Messari released its Q1 2024 Filecoin Ecosystem Report, which highlighted a rise in user adoption and in the number of projects building on Filecoin. Let’s dive into some of the key insights.

📈 The amount of data stored on the Filecoin network continues to climb.

Nearly 1,900 PiB in total active deals were stored on the Filecoin network in Q1 2024, up 9% from 1,700 PiB in Q4 2023.

Why are active deals important? The amount of data stored in active deals between storage clients and storage providers helps gauge demand for Filecoin storage. Year over year, active deals are up 2X!

Q1 Highlight: Destor and Seal Storage announced an AI data integrity improvement research project with Cyber SMART, an industry-university cooperative funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and other industry members. The project will explore how immutable and auditable record-of-data technology can ensure trustworthiness in generative AI/ML applications.

📘 Large data sets stored on Filecoin increased in Q1.

As of Q1 2024, 2,007 clients have onboarded datasets on Filecoin, with 508 large dataset clients (i.e., storing datasets that exceed 1,000 TiB in size), a 9% jump from 465 in Q4 2023.

Data clients range from the Democracy’s Library storing American presidential administration data collected by the Internet Archive, to Solana’s archival of their chain state, to the SETI Institute storing astronomical research data. Explore other data clients with the Filecoin Network Data Client Explorer.

📝 Over 3,400 unique smart contracts deployed on Filecoin, up 26% from last quarter.

The Ethereum-compatible Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM) continues to gain traction with builders. FVM dapps tap into storage primitives on Filecoin to create valuable workflows including perpetual storage, data access control, compute-over-data, data DAOs, and more.

Are you building on Filecoin? The FF Developer Working Group (DevWG) is open to all devs and community members to share their technical or industry expertise, raise challenges for collective deliberation, advocate for developing in specific areas of the network, provide updates on projects, and develop a presence in the Filecoin governance process. Learn more on the DevWG ReadMe and hop into the #dev-wg Slack channel with any questions.

The Filecoin ecosystem expands.

The Messari report also provides an ecosystem overview featuring the Filecoin Ecosystem Explorer, a community-powered database of projects in the network. As of March 2024, over 160 known projects are highlighted, such as:

  • EQTY Lab: Uses cryptographic methods to validate snapshots of an AI model's lineage, leveraging decentralized technologies, like IPFS and Filecoin, to anchor model data.
  • Banyan: Web2-like decentralized storage for enterprises beyond archival.
  • Lighthouse: Perpetual data storage service with a one-time payment pricing model.
  • Numbers Protocol: Preserves data authenticity for digital media and generative AI.
  • Fluence: a decentralized, serverless computing platform empowering developers to scale their Web3 project.
